Before Copenhagen – The Ward Room of HMS Elephant, 1 April 1801
Stunning wide 700pc jigsaw cut for Nicki Barker in 2009. An earlet cut with 3D-enhancement with champagne & glass whimsies amongst others. Nicki says,
“This showcases Rob’s cutting skills at their very best with exquisite colour-line cutting, a section of thicker layer in the naval butler which cleverly joins the 2 puzzle blocks together, along with every trick in his cutting book (from internal edge pieces, split heart-shaped nobs to edges that end in the centre of heart-shaped nobs and difficult to join edge pieces). The end result is quite a challenge to assemble, but not impossible. Generally, the knob pieces are so well cut there can be no mistake as to placement, but on at least a couple of occasions I was convinced the piece was missing only to find it later placed almost perfectly aligned against another officer’s leg!”
The 1898 painting by Thomas Davidson shows Nelson and his officers aboard HMS Elephant at dinner on the eve of battle, toasting good fortune and a fair wind.
