My Neighbour's House
No 120 in Nicki’s collection, cut 21st July 2012 by Rob Garner of Amber Puzzles and sold on in 2014. The image is 'My Neighbour's House - by Frederick William Ewell, dated 1929. Here you see the earlet cutting style, the 3D enhancement (the framed painting is raised), the careful line cutting which makes it more difficult to assemble, and the appropriately placed whimsies. The first thing I noticed on laying out the pieces was the high proportion of straight edges, from all those internal architectural lines. The dark areas were the most difficult, and I didn't have an idea of how the various elements fitted into the scene.
Elwell was born in Beverley. He studied in Lincoln, Antwerp & Paris. Much of his work, practised in a vigorous and realistic style, expressed his interest in recording Yorkshire life.
