Isabella & The Pot of Basil

Raul’s cut shows more clearly against the dark background of the painting. Raul has an elegant round-knobbed interlocking cut, including his single paintbrush signature whimsy. The felt-lined wooden box has a sliding lid with a red paintbrush handle. A record card is included.

Waterhouse was one of many Pre-Raphaelite artists to tackle the story, the tragic love of Isabella for servant Lorenzo, who was murdered by her brothers. It was taken from Boccaccio’s Decameron and a later poem by Keats. The painting was sold by Christie's for Sir Rod Stewart in 2017.
