Saving the Guns

1000-piece fully interlocking plywood jigsaw puzzle, supplied in a sturdy box with the rather uncommon radiating colours label and small black and white guide picture. The puzzle is estimated to be of c1940s-early 1950s manufacture.

The box also included a small checker's label and was originally bound with a blue ribbon tie. I have included an image of the box-lid partly raised from the box-base, emphasizing the original colours and pattern which adorned it!

The superbly detailed military painting is by Richard Caton Woodville (British 1856-1927) and its fuller title is" Saving the Guns at the Battle of Maiwand", depicting the retreat of the Royal Horse Artillery from Mahmudabad during the Afghan Campaign in 1879.
