Homeric, s.s.

A picture by Walter Thomas of the s.s. Homeric liner with a sailing ship and a tug in the foreground.

This vessel, originally called the 'Columbus' was launched in Danzig (Germany) in 1913 and ceded to Britain in 1919 as part of the WW1 reparations. After upgrading it was renamed 'Homeric' and sold to the White Star line where it remained in service until 1935 with a very good reputation for stability and reliability. When the company merged with Cunard in 1934 the Homeric came under the Cunard-White Star umbrella and became eligible for inclusion in Chad Valley's Cunard series of puzzles.

This example comes in a white and green book box bearing the Cunard and White Star flags. The above information indicates a manufacturing date of c.1934.
