Toast, The

The box for this 350 piece plywood jigsaw puzzle is more akin to the sturdy card boxes often used by jigsaw lending libraries, whilst the outer label, which is partially missing matches, that of the London company W.G. Evans, see their puzzle Thames at Streatley, by way of an example. The push-fit cutting style, along with the shapes featuring amongst the seventeen whimsies, or figural shapes also help to confirm the puzzle's origins.
The painting, by the artist George Goodwin Kilburne (1839-1924), was issued as a Pears print, fully entitled The Toast:- The Ladies, God Bless 'em., the same painting also appearing in another puzzle which is of Unidentified manufacture, but shows the labels from the original print.
