Suspense

Although included here as a library jigsaw puzzle, this solid wooden example seems certain to have much earlier origins, probably early 20th century, when such "Pears" prints were routinely available having been issued in their Christmas albums from c1891-1925.

The painting is by the British artist Charles Burton Barber (1845-1894), signed and dated 1894, the year of his death. It was issued as a chromolithographic print in the 1895 Christmas annual.

The cutting style is mainly push-fit, although the border does feature some interlocking pieces. It also includes accurate and widespread line-cutting on colour borders.

The puzzle is housed in one of the library's traditional cloth bags with a luggage-style details label attached.
