Wings

A quite beautiful little wooden jigsaw puzzle, cut by Dolly McDougall for her jigsaw library and featuring a predominantly non-interlocking cut, but within an interlocking border. Colour line-cutting made for a very pleasurably challenging several hours of assembly time!
The artwork is stunning and holds a very interesting story in its own right. The painting is attributed to Spaj Atkinson, a disabled London artist who gained notoriety for his use of old and damaged butterfly wings, those considered unsuitable for science or collectors, to enhance his paintings. He is understood to have been active in the 1920s-1930s and known to have exhibited at Harrods in 1933, attracting some very famous collectors of his work, including Queen Mary and Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin.
