Pears Shoeing The Bay Mare by Landseer

A jigsaw from John Hyde’s celebrated Pears collection, jp1143 without its original box. I believe it likely that this is by Patchwork Picture Puzzles, a very uncommon brand cut in Sheffield. It is a marvellously inventive whimsy cut featuring tools and keys, with long-armed pieces. I’ve included a collage of known Patchwork jigsaws for comparison.

The print, from the 1899 Pears Annual set, is by Edward Landser (1844) showing a farrier shoeing the eponymous mare, with a dog and donkey looking on. John displayed this at his last lecture about his Pears collection at the June 2023 BCD meeting, where I photographed it. A marvellous jigsaw, although the print wasn’t a favourite of John’s.
