Children of Martial Caillebotte, The
Highly imaginative 418 piece plywood jigsaw puzzle, cut for the British Jigsaw Puzzle Library and thought to be of c1980s manufacture. The puzzle contains Eric's typically characteristic variety of styles, including rounded corners and accurate colour line-cutting. A combination of interlocking and push-fit pieces are surrounded by a clever fully interlocking border, made up of numerous different forms of tabs. There are also two areas of his quite frequently used method of creating a swirling area of narrow concentric bands, each made up of thin, almost snake-like pieces (see 3rd and 4th images). Special shaped pieces in the form of Bactrian Camel, lamb, rabbit and hexagon, add further interest to this fabulous puzzle. The radiating pattern of pieces surrounding the camel's neck and back are another nice feature!
The 1895 painting, which features the children of fellow artist Gustave Caillebotte's younger brother Martial, is by the French Impressionist artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
