Students at Keele

Another superb example of the imagination and design ideas used by Eric in advance of starting to cut a puzzle. Here, in this 910 piece plywood jigsaw puzzle, cut for the British Jigsaw Puzzle Library, he has created a diamond shaped, fully interlocking chain of pieces which reach the centre of all four edges. This then holds in place all the central pieces, most of which are push fit and feature abundant use of colour line-cutting. The four corner sections, created as a result of the initial diamond design, are also largely non-interlocking, with the upper right containing individually cut letters to form the title "P.O. Keele".

The c1965 painting, which has origins as one of many rural post office advertising posters, is by the artist Walter James Roberts (1907-1998).
