Simpkin Marshall

Simpkin Marshall were a major London publishing company, in the early 1900s becoming Britain's largest book wholesaler. Founded in 1819 the firm continued to operate under various trading names, right up until its insolvency in 1954, just four years after its acquisition by the media mogul Robert Maxwell.
During the 1930s, plywood jigsaw puzzles formed an additional part of their product portfolio, yet it seems to have been a fairly short lived venture. Although, box lids promote them as being the manufacturers themselves, it does seem more likely that the puzzles were cut elsewhere, quite possibly by fellow London publishers and jigsaw maker AVN Jones.
The company was based in Stationer's Hall Court, London. Their most extensive set of puzzles, those of the "Sport and Travel Series", were branded as "Hall-Court" jig-saw puzzles, a clear homage to their premises address in one of London's most historically important publishing districts.
