Risk It

Most interesting little 150 piece plywood jigsaw puzzle featuring a very colourful art deco style painting by the British illustrator Will True (1866-1955). The puzzle, which is estimated to be of c1920s manufacture, features the familiar cutting style associated with this high-quality British brand, that of a combination of push-fit and semi-interlocking pieces, held within a fully interlocking border, with careful colour line-cutting applied within the push-fit subject areas. The origins of the artwork have not yet been discovered but perhaps have a Valentine’s Day connection.

The most interesting aspect of this example is the appearance of the print company name, that of David Allen and Sons Ltd, Harrow, Middx, along the lower edge of the print itself. This name can also be associated with many other theatrical, transport-themed and other advertising pieces of artwork of the era, some of which have been seen in jigsaw puzzle examples, albeit rarely as clearly displayed as in this one!
