Going Up

Top quality plywood puzzle featuring careful outline cutting around the biplane, along with colour line-cutting throughout. The combination of push-fit and semi-interlocking pieces are all held within a fully interlocking border, very much the preferred format for this high-class manufacturer.

The wonderful image carries no signature, but its context is clearly from a promotional poster for the musical comedy of the same name. This premiered in New York in 1917, before opening at London's Gaiety Theatre in 1918 where it completed 574 performances! The London show starred Evelyn Laye as Madeline, who also features as the title character in the Holtzapffel "Figure=It=Out" puzzle Madame Pompadour which ran in 1923 at London's Daly's Theatre for 469 performances. She also starred in another London run at Daly's, this time in 1928, a poster for which features in the Parker Brothers Pastime puzzle The Dollar Princess

I have recently discovered information which implies that the poster for this production was designed by the British illustrator and World renowned costume designer Dolly Tree, who is also attributed to the artwork featuring in another Studio puzzle "The Beauty Spot".
