Dressmaker, The

A fabulous little, 177 piece solid mahogany-backed jigsaw puzzle, cut in a combined style of push-fit and semi-interlocking styles. The beautiful painting is by by the New Zealand born artist Molly Sale Covey, born in 1880 and who emigrated to the United States in 1909 and passed away in 1917, at the age of just 37.
This puzzle was part of a small private collection which also included the puzzle Anticipation. In the case of both puzzles, the artwork had origins in 1915 dated issues of the French fashion magazine "Le Miroir des Modes". It therefore seems likely that both were cut at a similar time, possibly by the same cutter.

The hinge-lidded box base carries one hand-written inscription of "Jack complete Oct. 1952, both name and date also appearing on the "Anticipation" example.
