Hunting in County Galway

296-piece plywood jigsaw puzzle of unknown manufacturing origin, skilfully cut in a predominantly semi-interlocking style. The puzzle is then housed in a good quality box with lift-off lid and pinned ribbon tie.

The humorous painting is by the great British self-taught artist Charlie Johnson Payne (1884-1967), better known as "Snaffles", the original print title being "The Biggest Walls in the Counthry was in it". When published, this carried the smaller writing caption of "and heaven help them as had to be building them up after us.". The scene was a humorous portrayal of the artist's first visit to Ireland in 1930, joining the County Galway hunt as it blazed its way across the numerous, and sometimes very high, limestone walls which criss-cross the land! The colloquial spelling of "Counthry", was a cheeky slant on the Irish pronunciation of country!
