Believed to be of c1940/42 vintage, this finely cut plywood puzzle predates the arrival of the separate range branding identities of Royal and Rex etc. The box label is covered over by that of the retailer, Kate Lemoinne & Co of Avenue Victor Hugo in Paris.
The humorous study is by the French artist Harry Eliott, born Charles Edmont Hermet (1875-1959).
