New York Harbour

This 125 piece "Topical Series" plywood jigsaw puzzle features an unsigned painting, one which was also used for a number of other Victory puzzles. This example is estimated to be of late 1950s manufacture, the ship featured is now known to be the French S.S. Liberté which operated the New York-Le Havre service from around 1950-1961, when she was replaced by the newly built French flagship S.S. France.

Originally named S.S. Europa, the ship was built for the German shipping company NDL and launched in 1928. After WWII she was awarded to the French Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, typically known overseas as the French Line, or CGT and was refitted and rechristened Liberté.

The box side carries a "Victory" logo I had not noticed before (see close-up image). Whether this can be used to date the puzzle more accurately is not yet known.
