A drawing of this species by the Belgian-born artist and botanist Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759–1840) taken from his book 'Les Roses'.

Rosa sulfurea was the only yellow rose of its colour in cultivation in Western countries until the tea roses were introduced from China in the nineteenth century.
