It starred Edward Arnold as Sutter with a supporting cast including Lee Tracy, Binnie Barnes, Katharine Alexander, Montagu Love, and Harry Carey as Kit Carson. The film was directed by James Cruze.

The plot was based on the French novel "L'Or; la merveilleuse histoire du gènèral Johan August Sutter" by Blaise Cendrars (Paris 1925).
