Warne & Co Ltd, Frederick

Frederick Warne & Co Ltd, marketed many wooden puzzles, often under names associated with their address. Bedford and Chandos are their most well known brands, the company having operated from Chandos House, Bedford Street, Strand, London.

Their famous Beatrix Potter, Peter Rabbit characters were used to produce some shaped puzzles over quite a long period. The earlier examples were cut in a style similar to the Chandos puzzles, whilst in later versions, they were much simpler, with fairly routine interlocking cuts.

The Chandos name was first used by Warne's in the 1860s to market their new series of books, a set of 154 titles, aimed at popularising some of the best known and most highly regarded pieces of literature.
