Forward the Forty Second

500 piece, 6mm thick, mahogany-backed wooden jigsaw puzzle, cut as a 500+ piece fully interlocking puzzle with 32 very intricate figural shapes, or whimsies, and of 1910/11 origin.

The famous painting is by the Scottish artist Robert Gibb RSA (1845-1932), commemorating one of the battles of the Crimean War at Alma in September 1854. It depicts the Black Watch advancing up the slopes of the hills overlooking the River Alma, defeating the Russian defenders.

The label address of Carlton Street, London, helps to date this puzzle to the period 1910-1911, prior to their move to Norris Street.
