Upright Zig-Zag Puzzle, The

The Upright range of Zig-Zag puzzles formed an interesting deviation from the norm of traditional jigsaw puzzles, providing a base piece and central interlocking spine to which the remaining pieces could be mounted. Being of solid wooden construction and thus prone to breakage, their commercial success would appear to have been rather short-lived, judging by how few examples have been found so far. This 1916 dated Combridge's price list mentions the titles available, and although not specifically mentioning the Zig-Zag name, their puzzles are known to have been manufactured by them. An advertised price of 1/6 matches that of the King Albert puzzle featured here.
