Defenders of the Empire

Believed to date from the period c1915-1918, this non-interlocking plywood Zag-Zaw puzzle features a painting by the British military artist Harry Payne (1858-1927), in which he has depicted military equipment and representatives from the Navy, Army and Royal Flying Corps.
The puzzle was available in 300 and 400 piece variants, this being the latter size and both were sold entirely in aid of The Prince of Wales' National Relief Fund
The puzzle included a small brochure promoting the puzzle and others in the Nations Series of Zag-Zaw Picture Puzzles, the inside cover including a small scale colour image of the puzzle and a key to the various units represented.
The 400 piece puzzle includes over sixty figural shapes, or whimsies.
