Zig-Zag Puzzle Company, The

Based at a variety of addresses in Haymarket, LONDON S.W. the Zig-Zag Company were one of the main producers at the turn of the century producing a large range of high quality puzzles, often on solid Mahogany boards and introducing whimsies to add interest to the puzzles.

Earliest examples show addresses of: Carlton Street, London SW, and 8 Norris Street, London SW. The former is understood to have been occupied c1910-1911, however, an autumn 1913 promotional sheet still records that Carlton Street address. Given the adjacency of both premises, maybe they were operating from both simultaneously for a while.

Not all of the earlier puzzles showed addresses on their boxes, so dating them accurately can be tricky. A 1915 price list showing an address of: 32, Orange Street, Haymarket SW. and a later, Grant Richards Limited Zig-Zag leaflet with the same address seem to imply a lengthy time at this Haymarket location.

The Zig-Zag brand identity was also used to promote the later RACO (Richards Art Co.) branded puzzles.
